Don’t forget to clean your gutters

Now that the warm weather is upon us you may think that you have most of your spring yard jobs complete.  It may be a pain, but right now would be a good time to get the leaves and sticks that have accumulated in your gutters over the winter cleaned out.

Why Do It?

Clogged gutters may cause all kinds of issues with your home. Here are a few common examples:

Water damage: Properly functioning gutters and downspouts direct water away from the structure of your home, says the Insurance Information Institute (III). But, clogged gutters and downspouts may potentially cause water to collect around your foundation and, as a result, get into your basement.

Loosened gutters: According to BobVila.com, the weight of water, twigs and other debris may loosen gutters and cause them to pull away from their attachments. This may lead to your siding and trim rotting.

As with any household chore, a little preparation goes a long way. Gather the tools you’ll need before you begin:

  • Sturdy ladder (extension ladder for second story)
  • Tarp
  • Buckets with S-hooks or handled plastic bags
  • Safety goggles or glasses
  • Work gloves (optional latex gloves for layering under work gloves)
  • Trowel or handled scoop
  • Garden hose with spray nozzle (optional telescoping garden hose attachment with gutter-cleaning nozzle)
  • Screwdriver to remove and reattach downspout if it runs underground
  • Optional plumber’s snake for stubborn downspout clogs
